Teaching Development Activities

CONTINUED EDUCATION: certificates & seminars

Virtual Work Group , (December 2008), Faculty training, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, EDMC, Webex training sessions. We have a collaborative classroom where students are often called upon to work together. Students also may be required to participate in teams. This session looks at how to make virtual interactions effective and build teams that transcend time and place. While it is particularly valuable for those teaching courses requiring teamwork, the ideas can also be adapted to the discussion forum.

Effective Feedback 1 thru 3 ,
(November 2008), Faculty training, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, EDMC, Webex training sessions.

  • Feedback Module 1
This module introduces effective feedback by examining the four basic kinds of feedback we provide in the classroom. It defines these types of feedback and best practices when using them as well as general best practices for all types of feedback.

  • Introduction to Effective Feedback Module 2
This module looks at how we match feedback to course and assignment expectations. It looks at questioning techniques and uses Bloom's Taxonomy as a tool for identifying appropriate feedback.

  • Introduction to Effective Feedback Module 3
This concludes our series on effective feedback by examining how we adjust feedback depending on the student and the situation. Adapting a model from Situational Leadership, we will learn to examine a student’s readiness and choose a combination of feedback that matches that readiness.

We’ll examine trends in adult learning, approaches that are successful with returning students, and warning signs we should all be aware of.

Critical Thinking,
(November – December 2008), Faculty training, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, EDMC, Webex training sessions.

  • Module 1: Defining Critical Thinking
This module introduces the Paul-Elder Model of critical thinking. We will discuss the importance of modeling critical thinking through our behavior with students. We also will examine creative ways we can use this model in the classroom.

  • Module 2: Using the Elements of Thoughts
This module examines the elements of thought defined within the model as tools to explore our own thinking and encourage students to explore theirs. It focuses on the fact that these elements can be used with any assignment or discussion to enhance critical thinking.

  • Module 3: Using Questions to Encourage Critical Thinking
This module looks at good questioning techniques that build on the elements of thought to produce critical thinking. We will focus on using questions to examine your own thinking and encouraging students to examine theirs.

  • Module 4: Evaluating the Student Learner
This module looks at the different levels students can reach in their critical thinking. By examining the various levels of ability, we will think about ways of identifying student ability and encouraging them to develop further.

  • Module 5: Universal Standards—Teaching Critical Thinking in a Broader Context This module examines the universal standards and traits from the Paul-Elder model that help us overcome biases to encourage critical thinking. We will discuss ways in which we can use critical thinking to help our students gain fresh perspective and respectfully disagree.

  • Module 6: Putting it into Practice
This module will conclude our consideration of the Paul-Elder model by discussing ways we can use the model to improve teaching and learning in the classroom. The focus will be on sharing ideas based on what we learned and talking about what we will do next.
