    Assignment 5: Journal Cover Art

The Cover Page is to be well designed with a TITLE, GRAPHICS and YOUR NAME.

The cover must be the same size as the Journal (8 x 10) and be well thought out. It should reflect something about you. It can represent something about your major or other key elements you will be presenting in your journal.

    Suggested approaches:

    FIRST STEP: Search image databases:

    1. http://search.msn.com/images/results.aspx?q=&FORM=BIIR
    2. http://images.google.com/imghp?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&tab=wi&q=
(hint for google search – choose “large” image search.
    3. http://www.flickr.com/
    4. http://www.freephotosbank.com/
    5. http://yotophoto.com/
    6. Use a photograph that you took – or a drawing you made etc.

When you find an image you would like to save (online) and use in your art mouse over the image and choose (RIGHT CLICK > SAVE PICTURE AS). Then save the image to a folder on your computer.

    SECOND STEP:

Option 1:  Print images and cut and glue them together into the design.

Option 2:  Put the images and text together in an image editing program like Photoshop or a MS program like Power Point. Then printing them out complete.

Option 3: Use your own photographs and or objects layered over text printed on paper.  Or Purchase text to apply over your image or design.

    THIRD STEP:

Create your design. No matter which option you use in the first and second steps, keep in mind: the elements and principles of Design discussed in chapter 1 of the text and lecture.

    KEY Hints:

    1. Does your text stand out from the back ground?
    • Value Contrast: If you text color is too similar to the back ground (values are very similar) then the viewer will not be able to read the title. Make sure that your title as well as any text on the color stands out and can be easily read.
    • Shape Contrast: If your fonts are too small or ornamental, it may also make your title hard to read. Consider the background image when choosing a font style.

    1. Does your image(s) make a solid composition?

      Consider:
    • What type of balance is employed by your image(s).
    • Is unity as well as variety present?
    • Is there anything along the edge of the composition that will lead your viewer’s eye off the page?
    • Look for LINE, SHAPE, DIRECTION, SIZE, TEXTURE, COLOR, VALUE. Also look for BALANCE, REPITITION, CONTRAST, HARMONY, DOMINANCE, UNITY and VARIETY.
